What's Brewing, PA?

Among the top provinces in Canada with the most microbreweries, BC is home to craft-drinking beer lovers! We’ve seen an explosion of new breweries emerge across the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island alike, many located in desirable walkable clusters. Some are even hailing Vancouver as the new Portland!

Breweries are making a splash on Vancouver Island, too - our Mid-Island region is now home to 11 breweries stretching from Nanaimo to Campbell River, and a slew of special events and festivals like Victoria’s Beer Week, Nanaimo Beer Festival, Tofino Beer Festival, and BC’s Ale Trail. Even crazier - the idea of a "beer flight" has now been turned on its head, with private seaplane tours across Mid-Island, Victoria, and Vancouver of breweries!

Touted one of BC’s most highly anticipated breweries of 2017, Twin City Brewing has just opened their doors in Port Alberni! That’s right - Port Alberni is now on the microbrewery map!

The name, Twin City, is a throwback to Port Alberni’s past when the city was split into two municipalities, Alberni and Port Alberni. It’s all about the experience at Twin City, and we can tell you first-hand that they certainly live up to the hype. The service, food, and ales are top-notch.

Founded by owner/brewer, Aaron Colyn, Twin City Brewing is focused on bringing handcrafted ales to the people of Port Alberni -and beyond. Port Alberni’s first craft brewery aims to offer “approachable versions of both European and North American styles with an emphasis on using local ingredients and providing an awesome learning experience with every visit,” according to owner/brewer Aaron Colyn.  As detailed in Westender magazine, Colyn is a pre-med student who decided to come back to Port to brew beer instead of going to grad school “starting with nothing but passion and a not-entirely-useless degree in microbiology.” (We think he’s got a pretty good sense of humor, too!).

This sense of joie de vivre and fun is evident the second you walk in – brewers greet you with a smile and a solid recommendation based on your preferences.

Twin City launched with four beers on tap:

  • Porter Alberni (Dry Porter)
  • Swedish Gymnast (Single Hop Blonde Ale)
  • Run of the Mill (West Coast India Pale Ale)
  • Tickity Boo (British Pale Ale)

And Chef BJ Gillis makes sure you won’t go hungry – fill up on wood-fired pizza loaded with fresh ingredients from their newly installed oven or try one of their hand-stretched, doughy pretzels. YUM!Fill up a growler to take home, too.(Erin surprised Dave with one the other day, much to his delight!)

To celebrate the opening, we did a Twin City Brewing giveaway on Facebook!  As the main prize, we gave away 10 FREE Growlers and some t-shirts!

 The Growler contest winners were:

  • Shane Sieber
  • Lisa Brooks
  • Carla Lee Ann Neville
  • Ron Brown
  • Tarryn Gingras
