Although there’s no shortage of fun to be had here in Port, sometimes you’ve just GOT to pack up the car and head out for a day trip! The Alberni Valley serves as a great destination as a year-round ‘base camp’ for some incredible island attractions.

Here are some of our Top 5 Day Trips from Port Alberni:

Cathedral Grove – Be prepared to be in awe! Home to Douglas fir trees over 800 years old measuring 250 feet in height and 25 feet around, the majestic old growth forest is sure to impress any audience.  Very easy hiking trails for all levels are available, too. It can be wet here, so be sure to pack your rain boots and a light waterproof jacket!

Mount Washington – About an hour and a half’s drive, Mount Washington in the Comox Valley is home to a gorgeous family resort offering winter sports. Try your hand at skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, tubing, and cross-country skiing (or, just stick to the hot Beavertails!). Bordering Mount Washington’s Alpine Village is Strathcona Provincial Park, home to Canada’s highest waterfall, Della Falls - almost 8 times higher than Niagara Falls, and is among the top 10 highest falls in the world. This rugged mountain wilderness is not for the faint of heart during the winter months, so be sure to stick to the resort if you are not an experienced backcountry hiker!

Sip and Savor the Best of the Cowichan Valley - Considered to be the heart of the culinary world on Vancouver Island, the region has been named one of the world’s best island getaways by readers of Travel + Leisure and Condé Nast Traveler magazines.  Meet the makers of some of Vancouver Island’s finest wines, brews, ciders, spirits, cheese, tea, and even lavender! Just be sure to have a designated driver, or book a guided tour service:

Shop and Dine in Nanaimo – sometimes you’ve just gotta shop! Nanaimo has some big-name retailers throughout its many malls, including Port Place Shopping Centre, Country Club Centre, Nanaimo North Town Centre, and Woodgrove Centre, the largest shopping centre on Vancouver Island. As well, Nanaimo has three different shopping districts downtown, featuring locally owned boutiques, restaurants and much more. After all of that shopping, you’re guaranteed to work up an appetite!

Downtown, try Gabriel’s Gourmet Café for lunch, Asteras for a sumptuous Greek dinner, Firehouse Grill for their innovative sushi, OR the Modern Café for their homemade mac n’cheese! If you’d rather stay in the North End (close to Woodgrove) try Nori Sushi or SimonHolt Restaurant.

Well, that was fun! And we didn’t even get to cover our beautiful West Coast trips, to Tofino or Ucluelet. The good news about all of these day-long excursions? You can enjoy them with plenty of time to head back home to our beautiful Port Alberni – no place we’d rather be.
