Leading up to and on November 11, we wear poppies to show our pride and respect for those who gave their lives for us. Donations collected from poppies go directly to the Poppy Fund, a Canadian-wide campaign that provides financial assistance and support to Veterans, including Canadian Armed Forces and RCMP, and their families.
Have you bought your Poppy yet? In Port Alberni our local legion can be found volunteering giving out poppies as part of the Poppy Fund. Find them outside our local businesses in our community!
Remembrance Day in Port Alberni is an important affair; with celebrations, exhibits, parades and more! Here are a few events happening throughout the city this Friday for November 11th
Remembrance Day Ceremony
Location: Glenwood Center
Time: 10:15 a.m.
Following the Glenwood Centre Ceremony, services will be held at The Field of Honour Greenwood Cemetery, the Native Cemetery honouring WW Vets and the Harbour Quay Cenotaph honouring Merchant Navy Vets, and then back to the legion.
The Royal BC’s travelling exhibit of the First World War opened in Port Alberni on November 3. The exhibit features pictures, fascinating artifacts and stories of the war (1914 – 1918). A special exhibit featuring Alberni Valley World One soldiers will be included and developed by ADSS Comparative Civilizations students.
We are fiercely proud of our veterans here in Port Alberni, and shall not take their sacrifices for granted. Our freedom has come at their cost, and we are forever grateful.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.
Robert Laurence Binyon (1869-1943), For The Fallen
Join us on Remembrance Day for these memorable events in Port Alberni – we look forward to spending this special occasion with you in recognition of our local and Canadian veterans.
