We all know Port Alberni is one of the BEST places on the island to experience everything the West Coast has to offer!
We have it all - from hiking, camping, fishing, water sports, restaurants, wineries, galleries and more.
As we progress through our beautiful spring, we’ve built our summer bucket list with the top five activities we don't want to miss. And, we want to hear yours too!
1. Hike Mount Arrowsmith or the Alberni Lookout
Standing tall at 1,819 meters, Mount Arrowsmith is the highest mountain on Southern Vancouver Island! The ascent takes about 5-6 hours and crosses some difficult terrain - so be certain to be prepared and that you are physically capable prior to beginning. Always hike with a group, let people know your whereabouts, and pack plenty of food and water.
The Alberni Lookout is another popular choice, offering some of the BEST views of the Valley of Trails! There and back is about 4.2KM long, and you'll mostly be hiking on active logging roads, until you reach a beautiful second growth forest. And the view from the top - second to none!
Last summer, Randi wanted to hike the Lookout, so some of the women on our team offered to join her!
We encouraged each other along the way and made it to the top, together!
If savouring some local tastes is more your flavour, sip and savour some of our best local wines while relaxing. Make it an afternoon trying different wines, or add Emerald Coast to your mid-Island winery tour!
Keep Your Balance on a SUP Board!
Also known as "SUP", stand-up paddleboarding is an enjoyable activity for people of all ages and fitness levels! With various types of boards, there are options for everyone. During the summer here, you can rent boards from Three Dog Paddle Company, located on the Pacific Rim Highway just past McCoy lake Road.
Did you catch Dave's first paddle of the season? He didn't even get his suit wet! Do you think he'll be as lucky next time?
Go Back in Time at the Alberni Valley Museum
The perfect way to spend a rainy afternoon! Experience the heritage and traditions that make up the very culture of the Alberni Valley. Visit the Alberni Valley Museum and explore our history through photographs, folk art, and artefacts. Learn about our past in the lumber and fishing industries, the Nuu Chah Nulth people, and much more! This summer, check out the “Home Front” exhibit, which recognizes and commemorates the 75th anniversary of the changes experienced in British Columbia during the Second World War.
Quality Time on Sproat Lake
It's no secret that Sproat Lake is Vancouver Island's GEM! Whether you're lounging on a dock, paddling, swimming, or fishing - there is an abundance of beauty to be enjoyed. Our fishing here on Vancouver Island itself is world class, and Sproat Lake has some of the best rainbow trout angling in the area, especially in June through to September. The boat launch on the north shore of the lake is a favourite starting place. Saltwater anglers can enjoy the proximity to Alberni Inlet and Barkley Sound for chinook, coho and sockeye salmon. We'll see you on the lake!
So... there's a start! But we want to hear from YOU!
Comment on our Facebook post and tell us what's on YOUR bucket list this summer in Port Alberni, and we will draw one person to win a $25 Drinkwaters Gift Card!
