Buying a home is one of the most rewarding experiences many will experience in our lives- but it also comes with its challenges. In Port Alberni, and on the island in general, we have lots of qualified buyers looking to purchase homes, but we’re stretched for inventory. Last month, the Vancouver Island Real Estate Board (VIREB) reported that inventory of single-family homes on Vancouver Island has declined 36 per cent from March 2016. (Read all of the VIREB March statistics here). In Port Alberni, the price of a benchmark home is $217,800, an increase of 12 per cent from one year ago. In today’s market, you can expect that a well priced home in good condition will have multiple offers and move quickly.

Among the top provinces in Canada with the most microbreweries, BC is home to craft-drinking beer lovers! We’ve seen an explosion of new breweries emerge across the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island alike, many located in desirable walkable clusters. Some are even hailing Vancouver as the new Portland!

Breweries are making a splash on Vancouver Island, too - our Mid-Island region is now home to 11 breweries stretching from Nanaimo to Campbell River, and a slew of special events and festivals like Victoria’s Beer Week, Nanaimo Beer Festival, Tofino Beer Festival, and BC’s Ale Trail. Even crazier - the idea of a "beer flight" has now been turned on its head, with private seaplane tours across Mid-Island, Victoria, and Vancouver of breweries!

Ask anyone what their favourite childhood memory is, and often it’s of summer vacations spent with their families at the cottage or lake home. There’s just nothing quite like those simple summer memories of childhood; when our only responsibilities were the lake calling, late night card games, and walking along the beach barefoot with our family in tow.

Sproat Lake has become a desirable destination vacation spot AND year-round residence on Vancouver Island. Located 13 km northwest of the city of Port Alberni (population approx. 17, 000), which is situated in the south-central heart of Vancouver Island mid-way to Tofino and Ucluelet. Dreaming of home ownership in the Alberni Valley? In case you haven’t heard, or weren’t quite sure what it is, in December of 2016, our provincial government announced a new program intended to assist first-time buyers. The program is called the B.C. HOME Partnership program, and it’s designed to help first-time homebuyers who can afford the costs of home ownership, but are experiencing challenges with the initial step in entering the market – that is, scraping together a down payment.

The program contributes to the amount first-time buyers have already saved for their down payment, providing up to $37,500, or up to 5% of the purchase price, with a 25-year loan that is interest-free and payment-free for the first five years.
